--- Viking Headlines ---

Northwest will travel to Mocksville to play the Davie County War Eagles, #1 seed from the Central Piedmont conference, Tuesday May 15 for a second round NC4A state playoff game.  Game time is 7:00 and will be played at Rich Park.  If the Vikings win, they'll either host Mt. Tabor, Central Piedmont #4 seed or travel to Greensboro Dudley, the #3 seed out of the Metro, later this week.

Vikings roll over Patriots 7-2 in first round of playoffs

Northwest used timely hitting after three critical Southern Alamance errors and solid pitching and defense to win their first round NC4A state playoff game 7-2.  The victory moves the Vikings to 15-11 on the year and sets up a date with either Davie County or Matthews Butler next week. Keaton Haack went six strong innings on the mound allowing two runs scattering 8 hits while striking out 8 and walked four.  Haack surrendered
two out hits in a couple innings and pitched out of tough jams in a couple others.  The greatest Southern Alamance threat was halted in the third.  With two runs already in, the bases were loaded with Patriots with one out and a full count on the batter.  The Patriot hitter whistled a line drive back up the middle that was snagged by Viking shortstop Stephen Hemrick.
The runner at second base took off to third and Hemrick stepped on second to end the Southern Alamance threat.  Colson Everett pitched the seventh to finish out the game for Northwest.
The Vikings plated a run in the top of the first to jump ahead 1-0.  Colson Everett, Jackson Bellenkes and Greyson Evans had back to back to back singles with Everett scoring on Evans' hit to give the Vikings the lead. With two outs in the top of the third, Evans hit the ball back to the Patriot pitcher which looked to be the third out of the inning.  The pitcher's throw to first sailed down the right field line and Evans ended up on second.  The Vikings would make the Patriots pay.  Haack followed
with a double in the gap to score Evans.  Victor Dilla then hit a ball back up the middle that squirted off the second baseman's glove far enough to allow Haack to race around the bases all the way from second.  Shane Hamlett then followed with a double in the gap to score Dilla and give Northwest a 4-0 lead at the time.
The Vikings would answer the two Patriot runs in the bottom of the third with three of their own in the top of the fourth.  Jesse Juday reached on a catcher throwing error.  Marcus Shoemaker then bunted the ball perfectly between the pitcher, first and second basemen for a hit and put runners on first and second.  Everett then walked on four pitches to load the bases.
Bellenkes then hit a deep sacrifice fly to right to score Juday and allow Shoemaker to move up to third.  Evans suicide squeezed Shoemaker home and Chase Corrington, pinch running for Everettt, moved to second.  Haack would deliver his second RBI of the game scoring Corrington on a single and finishing the game scoring at 7-2.

Southwest defeated Northwest 6-3 Friday afternoon in a well played semifinal conference tournament game.  The game was tight until the end with the Cowboys making a couple more plays than the Vikings.  Northwest dropped to 14-11 on the season.
The Vikings plated one run in the fourth inning and two in the fifth.  Down 2-0 in the top of the fourth, Keaton Haack led the inning off with a single.  Haack moved to second on a Shane Hamlett ground out.  Matt Bond then singled to left field as Haack was stealing third easily allowing him to score and cutting the lead to 2-1 at the time. Vikings open conference tournament with shutout over Tigers

Northwest used quality pitching, good defense and a big inning to down Ragsdale in the first round of the Piedmont Triad 4A conference tournament 7-0.  The Vikings, now 14-10, will play Southwest Guilford at 5:00 Friday
May 4 at Ragsdale in the semifinals of the tournament.
Keaton Haack, Colson Everett and Jesse Juday combined on a two hit shutout allowing only four Tigers to reach base on the night.  Haack picked up his third win of the season going four innings striking out six and allowing only one base runner.  Everett went two innings striking out one and a base runner.  Juday give up a single and a hit batsman before striking out
the side in the seventh to close out the game. The Vikings did all of their scoring in the third inning on six hits and
two costly Tiger errors in the inning.  Juday led the inning off reaching base on a strike out.  He moved all the way to third when the catcher throw to first sailed down the right field line.  Stephen Hemrick then singled to left field to score Juday.  Following an out, Everett hit a ball back to the Tiger pitcher for what looked like to be a sure double play.  The shortstop dropped the ball at second giving Northwest runners
on first and second.  Hemrick and Everett would move up on a wild pitch.  Then Jackson Bellenkes roped a single up the middle to knock both runners in and extending the lead to 3-0.  Two batters later Keaton Haack singled to put runners at first and second.  Shane Hamlett followed with a single
to load the bases.  Matt Bond then single to score Greyson Evans, who reached on a fielders choice, and Haack to advance the lead to 5.  Juday then doubled home Hamlett and Bond to finish the scoring at 7.

Vikings fight past Hornets 9-4 in heated contest

Northwest defeated rival Western Guilford 9-4 in an emotional contest to finish the regular season at 13-10.  Both teams went after each other hard throughout the night in an intense, playoff type atmosphere. The Vikings opened the scoring with 3 in the top of the first inning.  Northwest loaded the bases on a Marcus Shoemaker walk, Colson Everett reaching on an error, and a Jackson Bellenkes single.  Greyson Evans was
then hit by a pitch to score Shoemaker.  Keaton Haack hit an RBI fielders choice to score Christian Dix, Everett's courtesy runner.  Shane Hamlett followed with a sacrifice fly to score Max Donnelly, Bellenkes courtesy runner. After a quiet second inning, the Vikings erupted for three more runs in the third.  Up 3-2 and one out, Everett singled back up the middle.  Bellenkes followed with a double to centerfield that scored Dix, who was
running on the pitch.  Donnelly executed a risky steal of third when Western infielders weren't paying attention with two outs.  Haack then drove in Donnelly with a single.  Haack manufactured the last run of the inning himself stealing second and third.  The catcher's attempt to nab Haack sailed into left field to allow him to score. The Vikings tacked another run in the fourth.  Stephen Hemrick reached on an error with two outs.  Hemrick stole second to move himself into scoring position.  He would score two batter later when Everett reached on an error.
Western would put two runs on the board in the fourth to cut the Northwest lead to 7-4.  The Vikings would add runs in the fifth and seventh for some insurance.
Haack doubled with one out in the fifth.  A pitching change followed, and Shane Hamlett greeted the new Hornet hurler with a hard single to center to score Haack.  Hamlett singled with two outs in the seventh and moved around the bases on an error and two walks including an RBI base on balls to Hemrick.
Colson Everett pitched a complete game for his first varsity win.  Everett didn't have his greatest stuff the first four innings, but battled enough to leave 8 Western runners on base including the bases loaded twice.  Everett found his groove and retired the last ten Hornets batters faced to finish out his performance.
Northwest will play at Sandy Gann Field against Ragsdale Wednesday May 2 in the first round of the Piedmont Triad 4A conference tournament.  Game time is 7:00.

Jesse Juday pitched a complete game for the Vikings allowing a run on 6 hits striking out 11 and walking two.  The win was Juday's fourth of the season.
Marcus Shoemaker and Jackson Bellenkes led the offense with two hits a piece.  Down 1-0 with two outs in the bottom of the third, Juday doubled down the left field line.  Shoemaker followed with a single to left, moving Christian Dix, Juday's courtesy runner, to third.  Colson Everett drew a four pitch walk to load the bases.  Bellenkes then delivered a single to centerfield scoring Dix and Shoemaker and putting the Vikings
ahead 2-1. In the fifth, Shoemaker singled with one out.  Everett then reached on an error to make it first and second.  Following a Tiger pitching change, Bellenkes scorched a ball to deep center field for a double, scoring Shoemaker and Everett.  His courtesy runner, Max Donnelly, would later score in the inning when Keaton Haack reached on a shortstop error, ending
the game scoring at 5-1. Northwest travels to rival Wetern Guilford Friday night at 7:30 in the last regular season game of the year.

Headlines:  Eagles down Vikings 5-1

Northwest bid to at least share the Piedmont Triad 4A conference championship fell short with a 5-1 loss to East Forsyth.  The Eagles scored 4 runs in the fifth in the victory.  The loss drops the Vikings to 11-10 overall and 8-4 in the conference.  The Vikings can still tie for second with East Forsyth if the Eagles lose to rival Glenn on Friday night.  Northwest conference season is over and can finish no lower than
third. The night started great for the Vikings scoring a run on three of their five hits in the bottom of the first.  Down 1-0 with one out, Colson Everett singled.  Jackson Bellenkes followed with a single to move Everett to third.  Keaton Haack then doubled home Everett moving Max Donnelly,
Bellenkes courtesy runner to third.  A Jesse Juday single in the second and a Marcus Shoemaker single in the fifth were the only two other baserunners for the Vikings the rest of the night.  The Eagle pitcher finished the night with a complete game, striking out nine while walking none and allowing only the five hits mentioned above. Northwest will face Randleman at Sandy Gann Field tonight at 7:00. Tonight will be Senior Night for Matt Bond, Victor Dilla and Keaton Haack.

Vikings cruise by Parkland 10-0, clinch playoff birth

Northwest scored in every inning but 1 in route to a 10-0 victory over Winston Salem Parkland Friday night.  The win moves the Vikings to 11-9 overall and 8-3 in the conference.  The current conference record ensures the Vikings a finish no lower than third, and can not be bumped out of the state playoffs if a lower seed wins the tournament.  Northwest is currently in a three way first place tie with Southwest Guilford and East Forsyth with one week remaining in the regular season.
Jesse Juday went four innings for his third win of the year.  Jackson Bellenkes and Colson Everett pitched 1 inning a piece.  The three combined for 8 strikeouts allowing only three hits and a walk. Greyson Evans and Keaton Haack paced the Viking offense with three hits each. Colson Everett singled with one out in the top of the first.  Everett moved to third on a ground out then scored on an Evans RBI single to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead. Shane Hamlett singled with one out in the second.  Hamlett moved to second on a fielding error and to third on a ground out.  Marcus Shoemaker then delivered a single to right to score Hamlett.  Shoemaker would've got two RBI's if it wasn't for a perfect throw to the plate from the rightfielder
to nab Matt Bond at home. Everett led the third inning with a double.  Jackson Bellenkes followed with a walk.  Two batter later, Haack singled sharply to load the bases.  Victor Dilla then scorched a single to left to score Everett.  The ball escaped under the Mustang left fielders glove to allow Christian Dix,
Bellenkes courtesy runner, and Haack to score moving the lead to 5-0. Haack moved the score to 7-0 in the fifth with a blast over the right center field fence that scored Evans ahead of him who had singled earlier in the inning. Everett and Bellenkes found themselves on again with a hit by pitch and a
walk in the top of the sixth.  Evans followed with his third single of the game that scored Everett.  The ball again escaped under the left fielders glove moving Bellenkes to third and Evans to second.  Haack then doubled down the line for his third hit of the game, ending the scoring at 10-0. Northwest hosts East Forsyth Tuesday April 24 at Sandy Gann Field at 7:00pm.

If the Vikings win, they will at worst share the Piedmont Triad
4A conference championship.

4/18 Whirlies blast Vikings 14-5

Grimsley used powerful hitting and poor Viking defense to defeat Northwest 14-5 stopping a 5 game losing streak to the Vikings.  The loss dropped Northwest to 10-8 on the season.
The night started off promising for the Vikings.   In the top of the second, Matt Bond and Keaton Haack drew one out walks.  Greyson Evans then doubled down the right field line to plate both Bond and Haack and giving the Vikings an early 2-0 lead.  Evans courtesy runner, Chase Corrington, would later add a third run in the inning scoring on a wild pitch.
The Whirlies would quickly answer with two in the bottom of the second and tie the game with one in the third.  Grimsley broke the game open in the fifth scoring six runs on two doubles, a home run and two critical Northwest errors.  The Whirlies would add five more runs in the sixth on one hit, 3 walks and four Viking errors. Northwest scored its other two runs in the sixth.  Keaton Haack led off the inning with a triple and scored on an Evans ground out.  With two outs, Jesse Juday walked and Marcus Shoemaker and Shane Hamlett had back to back singles to load the bases. Juday was then balked home to cut the
Whirlie lead to 9-5 at the time.

4/17 Vikings outlast Tigers 4-3 in 8 innings

In a typical Piedmont Triad 4A battle Northwest and Ragsdale fought each other back and forth until the Vikings plated a run in the bottom of the 8th to defeat the Tigers 4-3 in 8 innings.  The win moves Northwest to 10-7 overall and 7-2 in the conference.
Keaton Haack, Adam Swim and Jesse Juday battled the Tiger hitters for 8 innings.  Haack went five, Swim went two and Juday pitched the 8th to pick up his second win of the season.  Swim had to leave the game after injuring his ankle at first base in the bottom of the 7th.  His status is uncertain at the moment.
Haack was the hitting star on the night going 3 for 4 at the plate
knocking in a run and scoring twice including the game winner.  Down 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Vikings would score two. Matt Bond drew a one out walk.  Haack singled Bond to second.  Greyson Evans followed with an RBI single that moved Haack to third.  Colson Everett then hit a sacrifice fly to score Haack, giving the Vikings the lead at the time. The Tigers tied the score in the fifth.  The Vikings would move back ahead
in the bottom of the sixth.  Jackson Bellenkes led the inning off with a single.  Bellenkes courtesy runner, Christian Dix, moved to second on a Bond sacrifice.  Haack then delivered a go ahead (at the time) RBI single to score Dix.
Following a brief lighting delay, Ragsdale would score in the top of the seventh to tie the game.  The Vikings would load the bases in the bottom of th seventh with one out on a Shane Hamlett pinch hit single, a Marcus Shoemaker fielder choice sacrifice bunt and a Victor Dilla intentional
walk.  The Tiger pitcher would pitch out of the jam extending the game to extra innings.
Juday would get the Tigers three up three down in the top of the eighth. Haack led off the bottom with his third hit of the game.  Haack moved to second on an Evans sacrifice bunt and to third on a wild pitch.  Ragsdale would intentional walk Everett.  On a 1-0 pitch, Juday bunted a perfect
safety squeeze to the right side of the infield scoring Haack to win the game.  It was the second walk off safety squeeze for the Vikings this season and Haack was the winning run both times. Northwest will step out of conference this afternoon traveling to rival Grimsley at 7:00.

The Vikings return to conference action Thursday at
5:00, making up a suspended game at High Point Central.  The game will resume 0-0 in the top of the fifth.

4/10:  Vikings finish Pitt County Easter Tournament at 2-1 with a 5-4 win over C.B. Aycock

Northwest defeated C.B. Aycock 5-4 Tuesday afternoon at South Central High School in the Pitt County Easter Tournament.  The win put the Vikings at 2-1 for the tournament and 9-7 overall.
Keaton Haack pitched five and two thirds innings for his second win of the year.  Haack carried a 5-1 lead into the sixth before giving way to Adam Swim with a runner on first and a 5-4 lead.  Swim would give up back to back hits to load the bases before striking out a Falcon batter to end the threat and inning.  Swim would strike out the side in the seventh to earn his second save of the year.  The save and the win on Saturday night pitching 4 scoreless innings against Northern Nash earned Swim all
tournament honors. Marcus Shoemaker led the offense with three hits, while Victor Dilla, Keaton Haack and Greyson Evans contributed to hits a piece. Shoemaker, who went 7 for 9 scoring 6 runs, an RBI, a 2B and 3 walks for the tournament, was named to the All tournament team. Shoemaker led the bottom of the first inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Swim.  Dilla then singled to move Shoemkaer
to third.  Jackson Bellenkes then singled to score Shoemaker and move Dilla to second.  Matt Bond then singled down the left field line to score Dilla and give the Vikings a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.  Haack would then help his cause and extend a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth by curling a ball right around the right field foul pole for his first home run of the season.  Shoemaker would get fireworks startied again in the fifth drawing a walk on an 8 pitch at bat.  Swim once again
sacrificed Shoemaker to second base. Dilla would again single to move Shoemaker to third.  Bellenkes followed with a fielders choice that saw the catcher throw the ball in left field as Shoemaker retreated to third in a rundown.  Shoemaker scored to make it 4-1.  Two batters later with two outs, Haack smacked a base hit up the middle scoring Dilla giving the Vikings a 5-1 lead at the time.
